The investigation into the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk has intensified after state and federal officials released new video footage of a person of interest. They asked the public to help identify the suspect.

The fatal shooting, which occurred during a campus event at Utah Valley University, has drawn national attention and urgent calls for information. Officials believe the suspect’s unique clothing could play a key role in the search.

Release of New Video Footage

At a Thursday evening press conference, Utah Gov. Spencer Cox and FBI representatives showed surveillance footage of the suspected gunman. The video captured the individual climbing down from the roof of a university building shortly after the fatal shot and walking away with a black backpack.

Officials highlighted the suspect’s distinctive clothing, which included Converse sneakers and a shirt with what appeared to be an American flag design. Authorities also released new still images from campus cameras, showing the suspect moving through stairwells and outdoor areas before the shooting. Investigators stressed that these details, along with shoe and palm prints left behind, could help track the suspect.

FBI Reward and Public Plea

The FBI offered a $100,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the person responsible for Kirk’s death. Gov. Cox urged residents to step forward with any useful detail, no matter how small. “We cannot do our job without the public’s help right now,” he said.

Officials reported that more than 7,000 tips had already come in, along with 200 interviews. Despite the progress, investigators said they still need public assistance. Cox also confirmed that prosecutors plan to pursue the death penalty if the suspect is arrested and convicted.

Rifle Linked to the Shooting

Investigators recovered a rifle believed to be the weapon used in the attack. Federal agents described it as an older imported Mauser .30-06 caliber bolt-action rifle. They found it wrapped in a towel in a wooded area near the university.

The rifle contained one spent cartridge and three unspent rounds. Each had markings that investigators are analyzing. Some officials said the words might point to ideology, but they cautioned that the markings could also be meant to mislead.

The weapon and casings were flown to the FBI laboratory in Quantico, Virginia. Specialists there will search for fingerprints, DNA, and other forensic evidence. They will also disassemble the firearm for further analysis, which could offer more clues about its origin.

Timeline of Events

Authorities pieced together a detailed sequence of the shooting. According to security footage, the suspect arrived on campus at 11:52 a.m. He moved through stairwells and made his way to the roof of a building near the outdoor event where Kirk was speaking.

At about 12:20 p.m., the suspect fired one shot that struck Kirk. Medical teams rushed him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

After the attack, the gunman left the rooftop, descended the building, and ran into a nearby neighborhood. Investigators found shoe impressions and palm prints along the escape route. They are now reviewing footage from neighborhood security cameras and interviewing witnesses in hopes of tracing his movements more clearly.

Officials Describe a Targeted Attack

Law enforcement leaders said the shooting was a targeted attack. Utah Department of Public Safety Commissioner Beau Mason noted that investigators are following every possible lead and devoting extensive resources to the case.

The search has extended into surrounding neighborhoods, where investigators are contacting residents and collecting additional footage. Despite thousands of leads, no arrest directly tied to the case has been made. Gov. Cox stressed that officials remain determined: “We will catch this individual. We are investing everything we have into this.”

National Response and Political Reactions

The shooting quickly drew national attention. Former President Donald Trump, a close ally of Kirk, linked the attack to divisive political rhetoric. Speaking to reporters, he said investigators were making progress but did not share details about possible motives.

Trump later ordered flags to be lowered nationwide and announced that Kirk would receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously. He also called Kirk “a giant of his generation” and shared that he had spoken with Kirk’s widow, Erika.

Vice President JD Vance traveled to Utah to meet with Kirk’s family and close friends. He described Kirk as “a genuinely good guy and a young father.”

Democrats also condemned the attack. Former President Joe Biden said, “There is no place in our country for this kind of violence. It must end now.” Governors Josh Shapiro and Gavin Newsom called the killing vile and unacceptable, urging Americans to reject political violence in every form.

Governor Spencer Cox did not hide his frustration with the climate of hostility. “Our nation is broken,” he said, referring to a wave of politically motivated attacks that have shaken communities across the country. “Nothing I say can bring back Charlie Kirk. Our hearts are broken.”

Kirk’s Legacy and Influence

At just 31, Charlie Kirk had become a defining figure on the American right. He launched Turning Point USA in 2012 as a teenager and grew it into a national force. His influence stretched far beyond rallies—shaping discourse among young conservatives and lending energy to Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign, where his advocacy helped secure youth support.

His work was often credited with helping Donald Trump attract younger voters in the 2024 election. Beyond politics, he was also a husband and father of two, and to many in his circle, a trusted confidant.

Kirk’s stop at Utah Valley University was one leg of a wider campus tour. The event drew a crowd of more than 3,000, but also criticism, with some students petitioning against his presence. Despite the strong emotions surrounding the visit, campus police and his private security team reported no credible threats ahead of time.

Closing the Gap in the Search

Investigators continue to pursue every lead in the killing. Surveillance footage has been secured, a suspected rifle has been recovered, and tips are pouring in by the thousands. Authorities believe the suspect’s clothing and prints may prove key in narrowing the search.

Law enforcement officials continue to call on the public to share information. They remain confident the suspect will be found and brought to justice, while warning that the case underscores the dangerous rise of politically driven violence in the U.S.
